Alongside working on instrument technique development, we have simultaneously been working on our Black History Month Unit. The following are artists and topics we’ve discussed in class: 1. Koffee, the youngest person to win a Grammy for best Reggae Album, and the first woman to win the Grammy. We also discussed Jamaican leaders written about in Legend, like Usain Bolt and Bob Marley. 2. From Reggae to Reggaeton 3. Beyonce, Jay-Z, and Colin Kaepernick refusing to stand for the National Anthem during the Superbowl, and the ethics of artists and athletes using their platforms to protest racism in the States. 4. Black America Again by Common ft. Stevie Wonder and James Brown
5. James Brown’s Quote, and having pride in one's identity. 6. Up Next - We are going to imagine our own future where black people are looked up to and seen as leaders, creating our own song about Black History. As Stevie Wonder sang, "We are rewriting the Black American story" Looking forward to seeing what the rest of the semester has in store! Best, Sensei Nir
